Djokovic lost more than a final that day. He lost out on his chance to equal Roger Federer’s record of winning eight Wimbledon men’s singles titles and lost the of drawing level with Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
The blow also saw him waving farewell to the prospect of becoming the first man for more than 50 years to complete the Calendar Slam of Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in the same year. This is an opportunity unlikely to pass his way again.
And now with Alcaraz has come of age, Djokovic may find his chances of adding more grand slams to his collection dwindling.
The 20-year-old world number one took full advantage to seal a 1-6 7-6 (6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 victory after four hours and 42 minutes.
For a long time, the player had been as one who defied time, but as he headed into the match’s fifth set, many said he was starting to look old.
He had stopped running for some of Alcaraz’s shots and was seen stretching out his aches.
