Nick Kyrgios is set to pair with Venus Williams for the Wimbledon doubles as he returns to Grand Slam action. The 26-year-old decided to sit out of the French Open last month but now he is ready to compete once again SW19.
Kyrgios has not featured at a Grand Slam since losing to Dominic Thiem at the Australian Open earlier this year.
He claims his mental health will remain his priority heading into the tournament after admitting that he enjoyed being away from the sport.
Nonetheless, his return has been marked in style after he decided to join forces with Williams.
The Aussie reached out to a number of stars to discuss potentially linking up this summer but it was the 41-year-old who got Kyrgios’ seal of approval.
After revealing he will partner with Williams, Kyrgios wasn’t concerned about creating big expectations at Wimbledon.
“The mixed doubles team of the tournament,” he said.
Previously at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore, Williams was once asked who her dream doubles partner would be…
To which she responded: “I don’t know, I think it’d be fun to play with Nick Kyrgios.”
Wimbledon fans will now be dreaming of a fantasy matchup against Andy Murray and Serena Williams.
However, Murray has already confirmed he will not be playing doubles due to his fitness struggles, as he continues to focus on his own career.
When asked on a potential reunion with 2019 partner Serena, he said: “No, I hadn’t planned on it this time. Singles is enough for me. Getting through singles has proved tough enough the last year or so. So, I’ll stick to singles this year.”
While Kyrgios will be looking forward to his doubles venture, he will also return to singles action on Monday against Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
The Canberra-born ace took the chance to explain his thinking behind the break from the sport’s hectic schedule.
“I didn’t feel at all that I had to play. I didn’t feel obligated to play,” he said.
“I wasn’t pushed. I made a decision. When I was home I wasn’t looking at any results. I’d go on Twitter and see the odd result here or there. But I was happy without tennis.
“I just feel like I’ve got a little bit to give, left in the game. I feel like a lot of people wanted me to play. I feel like I’m playing for a lot of people.
“No-one’s made me play. I didn’t feel like I had to play. It’s just a decision that I made.”
