Nick Kyrgios fires lewd put-down to critic after being scolded over milestone

Tennis fans react to Carlos Alcaraz's Wimbledon win

Nick Kyrgios has fired a lewd put-down to a critic who targeted him over reports he would drop out of the top 100. The big-hitting Australian reached the final of last year’s Wimbledon but has been absent from every Grand Slam this year due to injury issues.

Kyrgios isn’t playing at this week’s Washington Open and will also miss the upcoming Canadian Masters as he looks to recover from a knee injury. And a tennis fan took to Twitter to scold Kyrgios in response to suggestions the blockbuster star is set for an almighty fall down the rankings.

“This’ll be good for him, he’ll now be able to relate to the lower ranked players he spends so much time making fun of on Twitter,” the critic wrote.

But Kyrgios was in no mood to take the insult on the chin as he hit back: “Protected ranking of 21 and will be able to get wildcards whenever I please. Good try tho.” And the ace then added: “That’s what happens when you pack out crowds everywhere in the world my boy. That includes you live streaming it with your hands down your pants.”

Kyrgios has become one of the most watchable players on the ATP Tour in recent years due to his high energy and unpredictable behaviour. He enjoyed a fine end to last season as he went toe-to-toe with Novak Djokovic in the showpiece event at Wimbledon before ultimately losing the contest. He then reached the last eight of the US Open following a fine run in New York.

But Kyrgios has since been blighted by fitness concerns and missed this year’s Australian Open with a knee injury, before sitting out the French Open after hurting his foot when his car was stolen. And the 28-year-old pulled out of Wimbledon the day before the tournament started due to a wrist problem.

Kyrgios, who is currently ranked at No 35 in the world, would have been one of the favourites to win the Washington Open after winning the title twice in the past. In 2019, Kyrgios overcame Daniil Medvedev 7-6, 7-6 in the final. And last year he got the better of Yoshihito Nishioka in the showpiece event as he won 6-4, 6-3.

“Washington, gone be tough to miss you this year,” Kyrgios wrote on social media ahead of the tournament. “Was gonna go for 3 time champ. Always amazing memories x if you are there you will be able to see my name up in the stadium court.”
