Medvedev extends winning streak to reach quarter-finals
Russia could have up to three players in the Australian Open final eight after world No.4 Daniil Medvedev continued his strong form with a straight sets elimination of American Mackenzie McDonald on Monday.
The 2019 US Open finalist is riding an 18-match winning streak, highlighted by an ATP Finals triumph in November.
Medvedev’s fellow top 10 player, compatriot Andrey Rublev, takes to the court next on Margaret Court Arena, meaning the two are on track for a quarter-final showdown at Melbourne Park.
Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev is the bolter of the tournament after setting up a final eight clash against Grigor Dimitrov.
The bottom half of the men’s draw remains loaded with top talent. World No.2 Rafael Nadal meets Italian veteran Fabio Fognini in a day session clash on Rod Laver Arena, while the Stefanos Tsitsipas-Matteo Berrettini round of 16 clash will be played Monday evening.
In the women’s draw, American Jessica Pegula has continued her streak to the quarter-finals eliminating highly-ranked Ukranian Elina Svitolina.
Pegula will play American Jennifer Brady, after the 22nd seed defeated Croatia’s Donna Vekic in straight sets.
Pegula is in world No.1 Ashleigh Barty’s half this year, along with Brady, Barty’s doubles partner. The Queenslander has a fourth round assignment against unseeded American Shelby Rogers, kicking off the centre court action on Monday night.
More to come.
