Kyle Edmund beaten in straight sets in US Open by French Open finalist Casper Ruud… but there is still room for optimism for the Brit after recovering from three separate knee operations

  • Kyle Edmund loses in straight-sets to Casper Ruud in the first round of US Open
  • Former world No 14 made his first Grand Slam appearance in three years
  • Edmund had underwent three knee operations but showed encouraging signs

There was a straight-sets defeat for Kyle Edmund, but there is still cause for optimism even though the returning Brit was given a reminder of the long road ahead.

The former world No 14 from Yorkshire was beaten in the first round, entirely expectedly, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 by French Open finalist and No 5 seed Casper Ruud.

Yet he can look back on a satisfactory trip to America which has reassured him he at least has a future in the game.

Edmund had three knee operations ahead of his first Gand slam appearance in three years

It did not always appear certain when he underwent three knee operations, and in this first Grand Slam appearance for three years there were encouraging signs.

His booming forehand caused the Norwegian problems on occasion and the scoreline slightly flattered the obvious favourite.

Having entered with an injury-protected ranking, and having managed 10 matches at different levels on this visit, Edmund will now know what he has to do to try and return to the heights which once saw him make the last four of the Australian Open back in 2018.

Surrey’s Jack Draper was hoping to join Andy Murray in the second round last night when he took on Emil Ruusuvuori, while Londoner Harriet Dart was also in action, against 10th seed Daria Kasatkina.

Meanwhile, a small slice of history was made in the men’s event last night when qualifier Wu Yibing upset Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili, thereby becoming the first Chinese male to reach a Grand Slam second round since Wimbledon 1959.

Finally, the usual chaos in the US Open women’s draw appeared to be off to an early start last night when former Wimbledon champion, Simona Halep, was knocked out of the first round by Daria Snigur.
