Iga Swiatek vs Jessica Pegula Canadian Open clash interrupted by Cotton Eye Joe

There were unusual scenes at the Canadian Open on Saturday when Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula had their match interrupted by Cotton Eye Joe. The world No 1 was serving at 3-4 in the second set tiebreak when the DJ accidentally started playing the iconic song. The umpire had to call a let as the fans in Montreal booed in response.

Swiatek and Pegula were doing battle for a spot in the final of the Canadian Open. The American world No 4 had taken the opening set 6-2 after breaking the top seed’s serve four times.

The 29-year-old looked to be on her way to victory when she served for the match in the second set but Swiatek broke back and it went to a tiebreak. Pegula again took the lead before the four-time Major champion got the mini-break back and found herself serving at 3-4.

Mid-rally, the start of Cotton Eye Joe suddenly rang out through the centre court in Montreal while Swiatek was going for an overhead, leaving both players confused. Chair umpire Marija Cicak was quick to react, immediately calling for the point to be replayed.

“What was that? Someone’s pressed the wrong button I think,” Annabel Croft said on commentary for Prime Video. “Don’t know what that was. What a time for that to happen. She can’t believe it.”

Co-commentator Sam Smith added: “Well done Marija Cicak, just lightening the mood. We love all the DJing at the change of ends but this is a vital moment. There was no choice but to immediately call the point to be replayed.”

When the point was replayed, Swiatek was able to hold serve to draw level at 4-4. She didn’t drop another point in the tiebreak, taking a 73-minute second set 7-6(4).

It was all Swiatek after the interruption, as she then broke Pegula to love to start the third set before a love-hold of her own. The world No 1 won 12 points in a row after Cotton Eye Joe started playing before Pegula eventually snapped her streak.

Much like the first set – where the first five games were all breaks of serve – both women started breaking each other before Pegula eventually drew level at 4-4.
