Grigor Dimitrov breaks silence after £62k watch stolen by gang
Grigor Dimitrov has broken his silence after his £61,700 (€70,000) watch was stolen by a gang of thieves said to be “targeting” the Barcelona Open and its players. The world No 31 was reportedly driving himself back from training when the gang approached his car and ripped the watch off his wrist. And he has since confirmed that he wasn’t “harmed”.
Dimitrov was robbed while driving on Friday after he was followed by a “gang” on motorcycles and one approached his car, pushing the wing mirror in. It forced him to stick his arm out to correct it, allowing the thief to steal his £62k watch.
The Bulgarian ended up walking into the Mossos d’Esquadra police station to report the incident. And according to El Caso, those close to the investigation believe the robbery was the work of a gang who travelled to the Spanish city especially to target the tournament and its high-profile players.
Ahead of his opening match in Barcelona, Dimitrov has now broken his silence with an Instagram story as he thanked fans for their well-wishes. “Thank you everyone for the kind messages the last couple days,” he wrote on Tuesday.

“Most important thing is I wasn’t harmed and I am ready to compete in Barcelona this week,” the eight-time title winner added. As of Sunday, reports indicated that the thieves in question had not yet been located, and Dimitrov’s watch had not been recovered.
The Mossos d’Esquadra opened an investigation into the crime of robbery with violence to arrest the perpetrators of the robbery, which remains open. And the police squad is said to believe that the robbery does not involve “the usual local thieves” seen in the centre of Barcelona.

Dimitrov will get his Barcelona Open campaign underway as normal and is expected to play on Wednesday. The 31-year-old is the 11th seed at the tournament and received a bye to the second round, where he will face world No 120 Emilio Gomez.
He will be hoping to bounce back after an early exit at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he defeated Ben Shelton before falling to rising star Jiri Lehecka in the second round. Last year in Barcelona, Dimitrov reached the last-16 before falling to fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
