And having already reached the French Open final this year, where she was beaten by world No 1 Iga Swiatek, Gauff has now been installed as third favourite with the bookies – behind the Pole and Caroline Garcia – to win her first Slam title in New York. It’s French player Garcia who the teenager will now face in the last eight on Tuesday.
The 12th seed showed impressive composure against Shuai, breaking at a crucial point in the first set but then having to overcome trouble in the second as she trailed 5-3. From there, she won four straight games to seal the win in front of a raucous crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Gauff burst onto the scene in 2019 when aged just 15, she defeated Venus Williams en route to making the fourth round at Wimbledon. Her all-round game has undeniably improved since then, with the young star currently ranked No 12 in the world.

Gauff also turned heads off the court in New York last week, predicting that Nick Kyrgios would win the men’s title ahead of his tie with world No 1 Daniil Medvedev. It’s a prediction that now has every chance of ringing true after the Australian beat the defending champion in four sets.
“He can win the tournament. We all know he has the ability to. He was close at Wimbledon,” said Gauff. Like her, Kyrgios is chasing a first Grand Slam singles title.
