French Open final delayed as Novak Djokovic forced to wait for Casper Ruud clash
Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud will need to wait a bit longer before their French Open final can get underway. The tournament postponed the championship match following the conclusion of the women’s doubles final. It means the world No 3 will be forced to wait to begin his quest for a record 23rd men’s singles Grand Slam title.
The French Open is set to come to a dramatic conclusion when Djokovic faces fourth seed Ruud with history on the line. The Serb can overtake Rafael Nadal to set a new record for most men’s singles titles at Major level by winning the trophy.
And victory would also make him the first man in history to win all four Grand Slam titles at least three times. But Djokovic will have to wait to get his campaign underway as the start time for the final was pushed back by 30 minutes.
Djokovic and Ruud were originally set to take to Court Philippe-Chatrier at 2:30pm local time (1:30pm UK) but will now walk on at 3pm local (2pm UK) because of the women’s doubles final. Su-Wei Hsieh and Xinyu Wang came from a set down to defeat Taylor Townsend and Leylah Fernandez in the first match of the day on the main show court.
Hsieh was making her return after spending more than a year away from the tour in an extended break and managed to win the first Grand Slam tournament of her return. Along with Wang, they defeated the 10th seeds 1-6 7-6(5) 6-1 in two hours and nine minutes.
The trophy ceremony wrapped up at around 2pm local time (1pm UK), leaving organisers with less time than hoped for a turnaround before the men’s final – prompting the change to the schedule.
