Federer sends classy heartfelt message to Nadal after Australian Open win
Roger Federer has hailed Rafael Nadal an ‘inspiration’ in congratulating him on his record 21st career Grand Slam title.
Nadal’s epic five set win over Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final on Sunday saw him create tennis history.
The 35-year-old has now won one more Grand Slam than rivals Federer and Novak Djokovic and sits top of the men’s all-time singles champions list.
Federer, who missed the first Grand Slam of the year through injury, took to social media to send his congratulations to the two-time Australian Open winner.
‘What a match! To my friend and great rival @RafaelNadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles,’ the Swiss veteran posted on Instagram.
‘A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion. Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world.
‘I am proud to share this era with you and honoured to play a role in pushing you to achieve more, as you have done for me the past 18 years.
‘I am sure you have more achievements ahead but for now enjoy this one!’
All three players are set to continue battling it out at the top of men’s tennis before calling time on their careers but world No.1 Djokovic is one year younger than Nadal with Federer five years his senior at 40 years of age.
Nadal was unsure if he’d even play this year given he’s been sidelined for six months with a foot injury but in his post-match speech he hinted his triumph Down Under has spurred him on to continue his career for as long as he can compete.
‘Maybe there is a chance I say that was my last Australian Open, but no, I have plenty of energy to keep going,’ he said.
‘I can’t explain the feelings I have right now but I am going to keep trying my best and keep coming here (Melbourne Park).’
