Emma Raducanu will take on 19-year-old Elena-Gabriela Ruse in a Champions Tennis exhibition match on Sunday, and the game will be broadcast live on the BBC.

Raducanu announced herself as a star overnight following her record-breaking US Open triumph in September, as she became the first qualifier in history to collect a Grand Slam title.

The Brit’s first homecoming win since her historic triumph in New York will now take place this weekend against the Romanian Ruse at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday afternoon.

Tennis fans in the UK will be able to watch all the action unfold in the capital via the BBC iPlayer, Red Button or the BBC Sport website from 11:55am GMT.

Sunday’s opponent Ruse – who is ranked 85th in the world – is no stranger to the US Open champion, after she acted as Raducanu’s practice partner at the Transylvania Open last month.

The 19-year-old finished off her breakthrough campaign with defeat earlier this month, after she was defeated by Chinese youngster Xinyu Wang 1-6, 7-6, 5-7 in Austria.

However, Raducanu was still able to cap off the year in style after she was named The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the year on Thursday evening.

The award – which was presented in association with Sky Sports – is in its 34th year of recognising the success of women’s sport in the country, and Raducanu’s heroic victory was noted as a key highlight of British female sporting success in 2021.

Sky Sports Managing Director Jonathan Licht paid tribute, commenting: “It is more important than ever post-pandemic to celebrate the progress and phenomenal achievements in women’s sport.

“We have seen some astonishing moments throughout the year, not just in women’s sport but the contribution of these nominees to sport in general, from the success of The Hundred to the extraordinary story of Emma Raducanu that moved the nation.”

Rebecca Myers, Sunday Times journalist and lead reporter for the Sportswomen of the Year awards also heaped praise on the US Open champion, describing her as ‘inspiration’.

Myers said: “Congratulations to all our winners in what has been a groundbreaking year for women’s sport.

“Our very worthy Sportswoman of the Year for 2021, Emma Raducanu, made history at the US Open and inspired so many young girls and women back home with her success.”
