Emma Raducanu wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021

Emma Raducanu has been crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021.

The 19-year-old enjoyed an astonishing breakout year in tennis as she won the US Open and became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977.

Raducanu was sitting her A-levels in economics and maths just two months before making her debut at Wimbledon earlier this year.

In her first-ever appearance at a major tournament, Raducanu reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.

She went on to deliver a dominant display in her next Grand Slam event as she did not lose a set on her way to winning the US Open.

Tom Daley, who won a gold and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year, came second in the vote, while Adam Peaty, who won two golds in Tokyo, took third place.

Tyson Fury, Raheem Sterling and Dame Sarah Storey were also nominated for the award.

‘Thank you, it’s such an honour just to be amongst these nominees. Congrats to you and all your achievements,’ Raducanu said after receiving her award.

‘I’m really happy with this, I’ve watched Sports Personality of the Year growing up and it’s an honour to be amongst those past winners.

‘I’m happy for British tennis as well, and that we’ve managed to get this award… again!’

Elsewhere, Sky Brown was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2021 following her success with Team GB at the Olympics.

The 13-year-old skateboarder won a bronze medal in Tokyo which made her Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medallist of all time.

‘I honestly don’t feel like I deserve it,’ Brown said after receiving her award.

‘I want to say thank you to everyone who’s supported me, especially my family.

‘I want to make Britain proud and I want to inspire the world, especially little girls. If you believe in yourself, you can do anything.

‘I want to get two gold medals in Paris for Great Britain, for you guys.’
