Emma Raducanu is battling for a place in the semi-final – potentially against her idol Simona Halep – this evening. The 18-year-old from Bromley will face-off against fellow teenager Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in her latest WTA match. The match comes less than a month after Raducanu became the first-ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam title, before she had even won a single match on the WTA Tour.
With that historic triumph, Raducanu became the first British female player to win a Grand Slam single’s title since Virginia Wade 53 years ago, and became the first qualifier ever to win a Grand Slam. Not only that, she clinched the US Open 2021 title by winning ten straight matches without dropping a set.
After an unsuccessful return to the match court in Indian Wells, where Raducanu lost in straight sets to world No 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich, she managed to tick two career-firsts off her list at the Transylvania Open this week. Raducanu, who has seen her ranking jump from 150 to the top 25 on the planet, scored her first-ever WTA Tour win over Polona Hercog in her opening match at the WTA 250 event, which was also the first three-setter she had ever played at tour level.
The US Open champion knows fellow talented teenager Marta Kostyuk very well, having clashed many times on the junior circuit.
