Daniil Medvedev was heard complaining about the court speed in Indian Wells for a third-successive match. The fifth seed was embroiled in a lengthy game with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina when he fell and needed a medical time out after “losing his nail”. And commentators picked up on him blaming the conditions.

Medvedev and Davidovich Fokina found themselves doing battle in a lengthy 3-3 game on the Spaniard’s serve in the second set of their Indian Wells match. The 27-year-old had already taken the opener and suddenly fell on the court mid-rally, needing an immediate medical time out as it appeared he cut his finger.

During his treatment, commentators picked up on the 18-time title winner complaining about the courts – something he did during his matches against both Alexander Zverev and Ilya Ivashka. Medvedev had threatened to take slow toilet breaks in both matches to reflect the speed of the court, claiming he didn’t care if that earned him “five time violations”.

And he appeared to air his grievances again on Wednesday, as Nick Lester on Prime Video said: “Just overheard Medvedev again having a go at the court speed,” while the world No 6 could be heard muttering about “slow courts” during his treatment.

Play resumed with the 23rd seed holding his nerve following a lengthy delay, and Davidovich Fokina managed to hold serve from deuce after Medvedev’s medical time out. But the 27-year-old continued to complain about something as he stepped up to serve in the next game, and could be heard asking the umpire for more help from the physio.

The former world No 1 again retreated to his bench for some assistance as it emerged that he his fingernail had come off entirely, instead of an initial small cut that he was assumed to have. “I just thought it was a cut,” Greg Rusedski told Prime.
