Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon preparations include an escape room and Harry Potter
Coco Gauff will be back at Wimbledon next week, four years after her breakthrough as a 15-year-old. The American’s career has close ties to the tournament given that she made her Grand Slam debut there with a stunning win over Venus Williams. Ahead of her fourth Wimbledon, Gauff has some unique preparations including an escape room with fellow pro Christopher Eubanks.
Gauff is gearing up for Wimbledon with some grass-court warm-up tournaments as the world No 7 reached the last-16 in Berlin and is now in Eastbourne. As well as getting some matches in on the surface, she is planning some other things away from the court before heading to Wimbledon for the fourth time.
“Honestly, here I was thinking about going to a movie but I don’t know if I’ll have the time,” the 19-year-old told a small group of reporters in Eastbourne. “But when we get to London we’re supposed to be doing an escape room me and Chris Eubanks and a couple people from our team.”
Gauff always makes the most of immersing herself in the places she stays for tournaments, most recently spending time in Paris – which she brands her favourite city in the world. While there, the three-time title winner saw the Across the Spider-Verse and she is already planning her third screening of the film.

“And I wanna see Spiderverse again, it’ll be the third time I saw it,” she laughed. “But I don’t know if I’ll do that again, I know I’ll see another movie.” One movie that is on Gauff’s list ahead of Wimbledon is Harry Potter.
The doubles world No 4 hasn’t seen the film series but wants to visit the studio in London. She added: “I haven’t watched Harry Potter but I know there’s like a little Harry Potter thing so I might try to watch it on the drive over to London, one of the movies maybe, so I can get something and feel the experience of it.”
As for Eastbourne, Gauff said it can feel like a home away from home – even if there isn’t much to do. “It kind of reminds me of where I live which is Delray Beach. It’s kind of a beach town like this, not much going on,” she laughed.

“Not to discredit Eastbourne but that’s just the truth – or Delray, it comes from a place of heart. There’s not much going on, everybody’s moving slow. It’s nice for a week. I don’t know if I would live here but I definitely think that it’s a good break from the tour especially when the weather is like this.
“And it does remind me of home a little bit so I definitely appreciate being here before Wimbledon and I think Wimbledon just gets really crazy so it’s nice to chill for a bit.” But Gauff won’t be visiting the pebble beach during her time at this week’s WTA 500 event.
“I prefer sand. I haven’t even walked out there, I’ve walked on the boardwalk but I’ve never walked out to the water because everybody says it’s cold and I don’t see what the point is if it’s cold,” she smiled.
