Coco Gauff makes Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils admission at Cincinnati Open
American tennis star Coco Gauff claimed she felt like “the opening act” after playing ahead of Novak Djokovic and Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open. Gauff’s comments followed her straight sets win over Linda Noskova on Centre Court.
At just 19-years-old, Gauff is one of the biggest stars in tennis and already has four WTA Tour singles titles to her name along with a runners-up finish at the French Open in 2022. After winning the biggest title of her career in Washington a couple of weeks ago, victory in Cincinnati would give her a first 1000 series success.
Victory over Noskova saw her into the quarter-finals as she continues her strong run of form but despite drawing in the crowds for her dominant 6-4 6-0 win she believes that the crowd were only there to see Djokovic face Monfils in the following match. Something which fans were quick to disagree with.
“It’s even more crowded than my first match yesterday,” Gauff said with a smile after her win on Centre Court. “Probably because Novak is after me to be honest, and Gael too.
Coco Gauff after beating Linda Noskova in Cincinnati:
“It’s even more crowded than my 1st match. Probably bc Novak & Gael are after me.. I feel like I’m the opening act. Come on, the guy has how many Grand Slams? I’m at zero right now. But maybe 1 day I’ll be the main act”
“So I’m glad that you guys are cheering for me tonight. So I feel like, you know, when you play the first night match and there’s the big star after you I feel like I’m the opening act.”
Gauff’s comments drew a positive reaction from the crowd who showed their support for the World No.7 who will carry home hopes alongside Jessica Pegular at the U.S. Open later this month.
“No it feels like that I mean come on, the guy has how many Grand Slams?” Gauff added. “I’m at zero right now so I’m the opening act but maybe one day I’ll be the main act!”

Reacting to her comments on Twitter, fans showed their appreciation for the American star. One fan posted: “I love her personality so much. way to go coco!!!”
Others were quick to agree with another adding: “I love her self awareness and how humble she is” with another echoing: “She’s so likeable. I really hoped she wins a grand slam [soon]”
Gauff’s route to the quarter-final, where she will face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, has been plain sailing so far. She is yet to drop a set and a win over Paolini will see her through to a meeting with World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
