Chinese star celebrates winning title by singing to crowd after trophy lift

Chinese tennis star Wu Yibing on his journey to ATP Tour

Tennis star Zheng Qinwen celebrated her latest title win by showing off her singing skills. The world No. 19, who is one of the brightest young players on the WTA tour, delighted her home fans by winning the Zhengzhou Open in China.

The 20-year-old recovered from a set down to defeat No.7 seed Barbora Krejcikova 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 and win the WTA 500 trophy. After entertaining the crowd with her brilliance on the court, Qinwen showed off her talents with the microphone by hosting a impromptu karaoke session.

She sang a Chinese song for the audience which should have come as no surprise given she told reporters at the US Open that karaoke and rollercoasters are her favorite hobbies. “Mostly I sing Chinese songs, slower songs,” she said. “I also do some Chinese rap. I maybe only sing three or four English songs. For the most part, it’s Chinese.”

Zheng’s victory saw her become just the third Chinese player to win a title at WTA 500 level or higher. The player along with her compatriots Zhu Lin and Wang Xiyu have all won a WTA tour title this year and they are the first trio of Chinese women to achieve this feat in the same season.

Zheng hit 10 aces and 30 winners in what is arguably the biggest victory of her career so far. After the Chinese player broke Krejcikova’s serve in the first set, the Czech star fought back to take the first set.

Qinwen responded emphatically to win the second set without facing a break point. With the score locked at 3-3 in the final set, the pair exchanged breaks of serve to leave the score at 4-4. Zheng earned two more break points in the next game with a powerful forehand winner and secured the break when her opponent miscued a shot into the net.

She made no mistake when serving for the championship, as two aces, a forehand winner and an error from her opponent gave her the title. ”When I was on the court finishing the last point, I was feeling super happy,” Zheng said after her win.
