Carlos Alcaraz on Daniil Medvedev scouting mission as star smashes racket

Carlos Alcaraz embarked on a scouting mission to watch Daniil Medvedev at the Shanghai Masters. The Spaniard enjoyed some rare downtime between his matches at the tournament to take in a contest involving one of his biggest rivals on the tennis tour.

Wimbledon champion Alcaraz was spotted in the crowd during Medvedev’s surprise defeat against Sebastian Korda. The Russian ace fumed during the match and smashed his racket, as he was dumped out in a shock loss.

Medvedev was clearly unhappy with his performance, double-faulting a remarkable three times. After losing the first set after a gripping tiebreaker, the 27-year-old sat in his seat, turned away and smashed his racket against the floor.

Korda went on to comfortably win the second set, and the American progressed to the last-16. Alcaraz will have the opportunity to do the same when he faces British star Dan Evans on Monday.

The 20-year-old was an interested spectator, watching on as Medvedev crumbled against Korda. Alcaraz has already faced World No 3 Medvedev three times this season, winning two of their clashes.

It was Alcaraz who prevailed over Medvedev in the final at Indian Wells and the semi-final at Wimbledon, with the young ace going on to beat Djokovic in the final. Towering star Medvedev defeated Alcaraz in the last-four at the US Open.

Alcaraz admits he has his sights set on finishing the year as the top-ranked player in the world. He can rise above Djokovic by reaching the final in Shanghai, although has work to do after suffering a shock defeat against Jannik Sinner at the China Open last week.

Asked this week if he thinks about catching Djokovic, Alcaraz revealed: “Almost in every practice. I’m not gonna lie. Obviously I practice with a goal. I go to tournaments with a goal.

“It is to end the year as the number one, so Novak Djokovic is on my mind almost in every practice. I have to practice at my best, I have to go 100 percent on every ball, to be able to catch him.”

He added: “I always say that mentally is the toughest part to practice, but at the same time is the most important thing if you want to be the best in tennis,” Alcaraz said. “I’m trying to work in every in every practice, in every tournament that I go, to learn from the things that I probably was not doing well.

“I want to be the best so I have to practice mentally to be strong enough to play at the same level and not have ups and downs.”
