Carlos Alcaraz ‘copied Roger Federer and Andy Murray’ says Wimbledon coach

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero has admitted that the new Wimbledon champion “copied” both Roger Federer and Andy Murray in order to defeat Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s final. The Spanish 20-year-old won his first SW19 title following a thrilling 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win over the Serb who was aiming to break Federer’s record, though the Swiss legend may have played his part in the result.
Alcaraz has been described as a combination of Djokovic, Federer and Rafa Nadal by none other than the 36-year-old Wimbledon runner-up. He did little to quell those claims and in fact agreed with the assessment, while Ferraro has claimed that his pupil studying the likes of Murray and Federer helped him get over the line after a gruelling final that lasted over four hours.
“It’s very difficult to say,” Ferrero told Eurosport when asked how Alcaraz adapted to grass so quickly. “I think he takes things on board very quickly, and we’ve also seen a lot of videos of players that move very quickly here. So, we copied a little of Murray, Roger and Novak, and he tries to copy a little bit the same. In the end, it wasn’t easy, but we did it.
“We said that he would have to play more or less the same level that he played against [Daniil] Medvedev. Medvedev is on the baseline all the time and Carlos likes to use the slice to bring the opponent to the net. That was something we needed to do against Novak, so it was one of the keys to break his rhythm. In the end, I think he was very brave in the way he finished the match.”

Alcaraz has spent the day after winning Wimbledon fulfilling his numerous media commitments and revelling in the glory of becoming champion, while he will next prepare for the US Open in August and September.
As the current champion in New York, he will have extra motivation to protect his trophy but Ferrero has outlined the next steps – which will include plenty of rest after an eventful Wimbledon run.

“He’s going to have some rest to reset a little bit and go to the United States feeling powerful and fresh again,” Ferrero added.
“I think we’ve learnt a lot of things after the US Open, so we have to do things a little bit differently here. He and the team know this, and I think we are ready to do things a little bit better.”
But until then he will be riding on the wave of being Wimbledon champion, with thanks especially to Federer and Murray for helping him defeat Djokovic.
