Cam Norrie calls for VAR in tennis for the US Open despite ongoing controversy

Cam Norrie has welcomed the introduction of VAR technology for the first time at a Grand Slam at next week’s US Open. The British No 1 called for the change at the French Open after claiming he did not realise the ball had bounced twice on his side when he won a controversial point.

Now last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist has his wish with the players at the final Major of the season in New York now able to challenge up to three contentious decisions each set. Challenges can be made for a range of calls such as double bounces or players claiming they have been hindered by noise made by their opponent.

The umpire can then review the decision on a tablet at the chair while fans can also judge on the big on-court screens. The new football-style technology – in addition to the electronic line-calling in New York – will only be available this year on the five biggest courts at Flushing Meadows.

“I think it is great,” said Norrie. “If you have that, you might as well use it. I think there are always one or two incidents.

“You will be able to use it if there is a double bounce. It doesn’t happen too often but it would be nice to have it for all courts.

“I don’t know the cost but it will be nice because it will be fair. People are obviously going to make mistakes so it will be nice to have that option.”

Norrie has lost all three of his matches since going out in the second round of Wimbledon to US breakout star Christopher Eubanks. The world No 16, who opens against Russian Alexander Shevchenko, said: “I have got to be patient with myself and I know I will come good eventually.”

All six British players who automatically qualify for the main draw – Norrie, Dan Evans, Andy Murray, Jack Draper, Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage – will all be in first-round action on Tuesday. Emma Raducanu remains in the top 10 of the biggest earners in tennis despite not playing since April.

Novak Djokovic leads Carlos Alcaraz in the Forbes Rich List as the top two seeds enter the US Open on a collision course to stage a re-match of their Wimbledon final. But the 2021 US Open champion Raducanu, who underwent wrist and ankle surgeries in May and has set no return date, has still banked $15.3m over the last 12 months.

Forbes claimed she has earned $15m in sponsorship deals with Vodafone, Dior, Tiffany. HSBC, Porsche, BA, Evian, Wilson and Nike. She also had the highest average engagement on her branded posts of any female tennis player.
