Boris Becker ‘crossed the line’ with comments on star’s fiancee

Tennis legend Boris Becker has been slammed for his commentary after discussing Wimbledon quarterfinalist Marton Fucsovics fiancee during the match.

The 53-year-old six-time grand slam champion was blasted after his commentary for the BBC wandered to the stands during the Hungarian tennis star’s clash with Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Co-commentator John Inverdale veered away from the topic of on-court play to point out Fucsovics’ fiancee, Anett Böszörményi, to joke that “If you’re a tennis player, it’s always good to have a partner called Anett.”

Becker replied: “They do say they have the most beautiful women in Hungary. I wouldn’t know that, but she’s certainly very pretty.”

Stephanie Hillborne, chief executive of Women in Sport, commented that the pair’s topic was disrespectful and inappropriate, especially because they so openly did it on live television.

“When two men are comfortable talking about women in this way, never mind on live TV, it shows there is still more to do,” she said.

Becker has been deemed to have crossed the line in the past in the commentary box, commenting on chair umpire Marijana Veljovic during the 2020 US Open men’s semi-final between Alexander Zverev and Pablo Carreno Busta.

“I have to say, the umpire is extremely pretty,” Becker, according to tennis journalist Petra Philippsen, at the time.

He added: “You eat with your eyes.”

Becker was in the headlines in 2020 when he butted heads with Nick Kyrgios, freaked people without with a huge growth on his arm and been embroiled in a WAG feud.

But fans took to social media to hit out at his latest comments, taking aim at both Becker and Inverdale.

“I’m still waiting for someone to explain to me why Inverdale gets to commentate on a Wimbledon quarter-final,” one fan wrote. “Bloke talks nothing but utter nonsense.”

“His joke about ‘Anett’ was pretty funny. Boris crossed the line. Why he is even on the BBC I do not know,” another commented.

“Why is Inverdale still employed at all? He has form. Wimbledon really is still 1950s Britain to the BBC. I dread this time of the BBC calendar,” one tennis fan replied.

The BBC backed up Becker when asked about his statements with a spokesperson stating, “Boris Becker made a lighthearted comment that was not intended to cause offence.”

Becker recently made news for questioning Naomi Osaka’s media boycott.

“Is that really pressure? Isn’t it pressure when you don’t have food on the table? When you’ve got to feed your family and you don’t have a job? When you have a life-changing injury? Isn’t that more pressure?” he told The Times of UK.

“You’re 23, you’re healthy, you’re wealthy, your family is good. Where’s the f***ng pressure?”

Fucsovics fell to Djokovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
