Alcaraz ‘copied Djokovic videos’ as coach fuels Wimbledon spygate controversy

Carlos Alcaraz wins Wimbledon men’s singles title

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, has admitted that the Spaniard studied videos of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer en route to his stunning win at Wimbledon. Ferraro’s claims touched on a controversial subject, with Djokovic demanding greater privacy after Alcaraz’s father filmed one of his training sessions earlier in the tournament.

The ‘spygate’ saga was met with serious intrigue from tennis fans. Reports from Djokovic’s homeland revealed that Alcaraz’s camp were seemingly gathering intel on the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s training session.

“That’s the situation we are all in,” Djokovic said on the matter. “The circumstances are such that we don’t have privacy in training, although sometimes I would like to have more privacy.”

When pressed on whether the allegations were accurate, Alcaraz said: “Probably it is true.” However, the 20-year-old insisted that it would not be an advantage given the amount of footage he already had access to.

“That’s the situation we are all in, the circumstances are such that we don’t have privacy in training, although sometimes I would like to have more privacy.”

It was later claimed by Spanish outlet Relevo that a journalist had filmed Djokovic practicing, while Alcaraz’s father was merely nearby having a chat.

With the dust settling on ‘spygate’ in the wake of Alcaraz’s mesmerising five-set win over Djokovic on Sunday afternoon, Ferrero has threatened to re-open the can of worms by admitting that video footage of the beaten finalist played a crucial role.

“It’s very difficult to say,” the former world No 1 told Eurosport when asked about Alcaraz’s rapid adaptation to grass. “I think he takes things on board very quickly, and we’ve also seen a lot of videos of players that move very quickly here.

“So, we copied a little of [Andy] Murray, Roger [Federer] and Novak, and he tries to copy a little bit the same. In the end, it wasn’t easy, but we did it.”

Alcaraz, who won another grass-court title at Queen’s in the lead-up to his victorious SW19 campaign, took a series of impressive scalps en route to glory at the All England Club. Matteo Berrettini and Holger Rune each stood no chance, although his most dominant pre-final performance was reserved for third seed Daniil Medvedev.

“We said that he would have to play more or less the same level that he played against Medvedev,” added Ferrero. “Medvedev is on the baseline all the time and Carlos likes to use the slice to bring the opponent to the net.

“That was something we needed to do against Novak, so it was one of the keys to break his rhythm. In the end, I think he was very brave in the way he finished the match.”
