Xavi Simons has joined RB Leipzig on a year-long loan – just three days after PSG re-signed him from PSV.

The attacking midfielder’s addition will go some way to replacing the firepower lost by the sales of Christopher Nkunku and Dominik Szoboszlai.

He scored 22 goals in 48 games for PSV last season, prompting PSG to activate the £5million buy-back clause they inserted into the deal to sell him to the Dutch club in June 2022.

Simons spent the bulk of his youth career with Barcelona before joining PSG in 2019.

Since then, the 20-year-old has become a senior international with the Netherlands and won multiple trophies, including Ligue 1 and the KNVB Cup.

When Simons was last at PSG, he struggled to get regular opportunities but was a teenager

Mail Sport reported on Sunday that PSG were considering sending him out on loan.

His performances have attracted interest from the Premier League, with Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Newcastle’s Eddie Howe both said to have monitored Simons, but it is in the Bundesliga that he will test himself for the coming campaign.

Aged 20, he should get more playing time in a side of Leipzig’s level as opposed to PSG, who currently still have Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in their ranks – though that could change.

Last time he was at PSG, the youngster made just 11 appearances over two seasons and he will hope that another impressive year elsewhere will give him the chance of a starting berth in the French capital.
