Barcelona manager Xavi has outlined he is in a ‘state of shock’ over the ongoing legal proceedings that have seen former teammate Dani Alves jailed on remand without bail over an alleged sexual assault of a woman in a Barcelona nightclub.
Xavi also expressed he feels ‘very bad’ for his Brazilian compatriot but admitted it was a matter of ‘justice’ after Alves additionally had his contract at Mexican side Pumas terminated in relation to the situation.
Sharing an illustrious playing career at Barcelona together during one of the club’s most successful periods in history, Xavi and Alves won five LaLiga titles together, three Champions League’s, and three Copa del Rey trophies.

Alves then returned to Barcelona in 2021 at the age of 38, working under his former colleague as the Catalan side’s financial struggles grew larger. The Brazilian made 17 appearances during his second Camp Nou spell before leaving to play in Mexico.
Xavi told reporters Alves’ arrest had put him ‘in a state of shock’
Commenting on Alves’ arrest and remand in prison, Xavi emotionally told reporters: ‘It’s difficult to comment on a situation like this.
‘I am surprised, shocked, in a state of shock. It’s a question of justice. Justice will rule whatever it is.
‘I feel very bad for Dani. I’m in a state of shock about how he is with us.’
Alves was one of Xavi’s first new signings when the Spaniard took over the the managerial position at Barcelona in November 2021 as he looked to add reliable experience to a struggling side.
The former Barcelona full-back says he is innocent and previously told Antena 3 TV that he was at the club with other people but denied any inappropriate behaviour.
‘I was dancing and having a good time without invading anyone’s space,’ he said. ‘I don’t know who this lady is… How could I do that to a woman? No.’

39-year-old Alves has denied any wrongdoing after he was taken to the Brians 1 jail outside Barcelona, said a source with knowledge of the matter.
On Friday, he appeared before a Barcelona judge after local police detained and questioned him. The public prosecutor had requested he be jailed without bail pending trial. Alves’ representatives did not respond to a request for comment.
The alleged victim filed a complaint earlier this month and the case remains open over a crime of sexual assault, Catalonia’s court system said in a statement.
