A landlord had to shut his pub for the first time – after it was drunk dry by Wrexham fans toasting their team’s promotion to the Football League.

Celebrating supporters downed 23,000 pints in the iconic Turf Pub next to Wrexham’s Racecourse – the world’s oldest international football stadium – after the club won the National League title on Saturday.

It came two years after being bought by the Hollywood A-lister Ryan Reynolds and comedy pal Rob McElhenney. Landlord Wayne Jones said he had to close the pub’s doors for the first time ever after all 93 barrels of beer each with 248 pints were drunk.

The pub prides itself on its links to the football club, displaying shirts, photographs, and autographs on the wall. A happy Wayne said: “All the beer was gone – for the first time in 14 years I’ve been here.”

Ahead of the game on Saturday, A-list actor Paul Rudd enjoyed a pint with fans – and the two club’s owners regularly drop in.

Actor Will Ferrell has also been there soaking up the atmosphere before a game as the club and the pub’s profiles have continually risen since its takeover in 2021.

The club was saved from extinction in August 2011 after fans raised £100,000. It was taken over by the Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) before being sold to Reynolds and McElhenney.

The pair have visited The Turf pub next to the Racecourse Ground several times for a drink – and the pub is heavily featured in their Disney+ series about buying the club.

Wayne said the show has sent thirsty tourists flocking to his bar from all over the world. He said: “Wrexham as an economy was going through a bit of a rough time. But Rob and Ryan coming in almost two years ago completely transformed the town – it’s thriving.

“You can’t pay for the kind of publicity we’ve received through the documentary because it’s been seen by millions of people around the world.

“We’ve just had our busiest quarter in 14 years. A lot of that is we do have additional games but Monday to Friday trade is a hell of a lot busier.

“It’s truly the heartbeat of the economy and if the football club does well the economy will do well, they go hand in hand. In the 39 or 40 years I’ve lived here I’ve never known it to be as vibrant and as exciting as it is now."
