Wrexham’s Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney forced to pay out £250k

Wrexham only at the ‘start of the journey’ after ending 15-year exile, manager says

Wrexham’s owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will be forced to pay out over £250,000 after Wrexham won the National League title. The club’s Hollywood owners were seen sobbing from the stands as their side beat Boreham Wood 3-1 to be crowned champions after an epic promotion battle with Notts County.

The Wrexham players will reportedly share a huge £200,000 bonus after securing the club’s promotion back to the Football League for the first time in 15 years. According to the Daily Mail, the club’s players chose to forgo win bonuses after each individual victory in favour of a bigger pay-out if they secured a place in the EFL.

The huge cash bonus will be a lift to the National League players, who earn an average of £1,000 per week, for playing in the fifth tier of English football. Not only will the club’s stars receive a cash boost but also the party of a lifetime in Las Vegas.

Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster told CBS Sports show Morning Footy that owners Reynolds and McElhenney had promised the club’s squad a “monster” post-season trip if they won promotion. The veteran goalkeeper said: “They’ve promised us a monster one at the end of the season. If we get promoted, they’re going to take us away somewhere with a lot of flashing lights.

When questioned if he meant a trip to Vegas? Foster appeared to agree with smile on his face. With a squad of 34 players in addition to the coaching and backroom staff the glitzy trip is set to cost the owners well in excess of £50,000. The Welsh club cost the Hollywood pair an initial £2m to gain control back in February 2021.

Since then they have invested a further £10m into the side, according to the Daily Mail. Some of that cash has been spent on the repurchase of the freehold of the club’s Racecourse Ground, while another £1.2 million was invested in shares.

Reynolds was asked to “sum up” the experience by BT Sport as he joined McElhenney on the pitch during Saturday night’s promotion celebrations. He said: “I’m not sure I can actually process what happened tonight, I’m still a little speechless.

“One thing that’s running over in my head is people said at the beginning, ‘Why Wrexham? Why Wrexham?’ This is exactly why Wrexham, happening right now is why.” The club’s journey under their Hollywood owners has been filmed by Disney+’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series.
