Wrexham’s Hollywood heroes keep putting Chelsea owner Todd Boehly to shame
Remember when the sceptics poked fun at Wrexham after it emerged a couple of movie stars had bought the non-league outfit?
It was a PR stunt. It had to be right, because the duo knew nothing about running a football club. Well, look who’s laughing now? If Wrexham beat Boreham Wood on Saturday night, they will secure promotion back to the Football League for the first time since 2008.
And it’s all thanks to the remarkable ownership of Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The good people of Wrexham rolled out the red carpet for these two – and have been repaid with a blockbuster of a story.

That’s because Reynolds and McElhenney haven’t just invested £10million of hard cash into the club. They’ve also invested their time, passion and caring attitudes into all those involved with the National League outfit.
When the pair took control in 2020 one of the first things they did was get the mobile numbers of all the squad. This resulted in the players receiving regular calls and texts from their bosses enquiring about their welfares both on and off the pitch.
Reynolds has even bought a house in the area. He’s now overtaken former Blue Peter presenter Tim Vincent as the most famous resident of Marford on the outskirts of Wrexham, which boasts just a Co-Op, car dealership, ice cream parlour and local pub.

The same boozer which Reynolds snuck into recently to stick £2,000 behind the bar so locals could celebrate Wrexham’s crucial win over promotion rivals Notts County. Reynolds has embraced the community because he appreciates he has a responsibility to do so.
But more importantly, he wants to. And most importantly of all, Reynolds and McElhenney have trusted the right people to get on with doing their jobs. Like manager Phil Parkinson. There’s been trust instead of interference – and support instead of ill-judged decisions.
Just imagine the Glazers buying a pad in Manchester? Or Chelsea owner Todd Boehly sticking a drinks kitty behind the bar of the Butcher’s Hook close to Stamford Bridge?
That’s the place where Chelsea FC was founded in 1905. And it’s now where shell-shocked fans go to drown their sorrows as Boehly continues to bring their beloved club to its knees.
Instead of investing in the right people at Chelsea, the clueless Boehly spends his money on firing the right manager and hiring the wrong one. He blows obscene amounts of cash on over-priced players.
And instead of sharing a pint with those who will still be there long after he’s gone, Boehly chooses to break bread with Real Madrid bigwigs in a swanky London restaurant. That was ahead of the latest defeat to add to the long list of them which has now seen Chelsea’s season become nothing short of a total disgrace.
He doesn’t even have the wit to work out the team needs a decent striker! Boehly is demolishing Chelsea brick by brick – and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it.
The so-called ‘Fit and Proper Persons Test’ could have been invented for him. But back in north Wales it’s one the likes of Reynolds and McElhenney have passed with flying colours.
These two are used to reading scripts, not writing them. But the narrative of Wrexham is one to be celebrated – because it’s proof that some foreign owners have the right intentions and act on them accordingly.
