Wrexham star gave up £260k supercar before Reynolds and McElhenney signed him
Welcome to Wrexham season 2 official trailer
When Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds signed a new striker for Wrexham last week, they probably didn’t realise that they were getting someone with a few Hollywood traits of his own. But living the millionaire lifestyle is not always a bed of roses, as Steven Fletcher discovered when he was playing for Sunderland.
The 36-year-old has joined the Red Dragons on a contract that runs until the end of the season, as cover for chief goal-getter Paul Mullin who is only just returning from a punctured lung sustained against Manchester United in a preseason tour of America.
Fletcher has plenty of high-level experience, having represented the likes of Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland and even Marseille during his career. With 53 Premier League goals to his name, he agreed to the deal after McElhenney and Reynolds failed with a £450,000 bid for Harrogate Town striker Luke Armstrong on transfer deadline day.
Fans at Wrexham have had their expectations raised following the club’s return to the Football League, but Fletcher has seen both sides of the coin during his time in the game.
None more so than when he felt the heat of Sunderland fans after it emerged that he had bought himself a £260,000 Lamborghini whilst the Black Cats were embroiled in a fight to avoid relegation in 2015.
The unfortunate situation came about after Fletcher agreed to pose for a photo alongside his new ride at the request of the car dealership he bought it from, whom he claimed to be ‘stitched up’ by.
After copies of the photograph emerged in public, Fletcher received so much abuse from disgruntled supporters that he eventually got rid of his dream sportscar for a 4×4 alternative, simply to prove that he wasn’t ‘Billy big time’.
As per the Daily Star, Fletcher said in 2016: “We all make mistakes but I don’t regret buying my car. “The fans gave me dog’s abuse for that, of course they did. It would have been worse had I tweeted the picture of myself beside this car but I didn’t. I got stick for standing beside my car posing for a picture.
“The guy I bought it through asked if he could have a picture of me. I agreed and two weeks later it fell into someone else’s hands and they tweeted it.

“People thought I was a Billy Big Time… they saw the Lamborghini and got the wrong idea about me. I had a reputation when I was younger for showing off stuff but I was brought up in a normal family.”
Fletcher is now at Wrexham, without his Lamborghini, but part of a project that aims to get the North Wales club promoted again as quickly as possible.
Both Fletcher and Mullin were second-half substitutes for the Red Dragons on Saturday as Elliot Lee struck an 88th-minute winner against Doncaster Rovers, handing Phil Parkinson’s side their third league win of the season.
