Wrexham are reportedly eyeing a big-money transfer swoop for Cheltenham frontman Alfie May as Ryan Reynolds looks to sign a prolific strike partner for 40-goal talisman Paul Mullin next season. The Red Dragons went three points clear at the top of the National League table on Saturday following their 2-1 win at Bromley after Notts County were held to a 1-1 draw on the road at Barnet.
Unfortunately for Wrexham, second-placed County still boast two games in hand on the Welsh side with the two sides also set to meet on April 10 in what could prove to be a title decider.
Given second place will have to battle it out for promotion via the play-offs, both sides are now gunning for the title which would automatically clinch promotion to the Football League.
Yet even though League Two football is still someway from being secured, Wrexham are now putting plans into place for their potential return to League Two as they seek to bolster their ranks with some extra quality.
According to Gloucestershire Live, Wrexham are now eyeing up a summer swoop for Cheltenham marksman May, who has built a reputation as one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the EFL.

At the end of the season, 29-year-old May will be quickly approaching the final year of his contract (expires June 2024) meaning it could be Cheltenham’s last real chance to secure big money for their talismanic forward.
Peterborough United, who were recently reminded of May’s quality when he struck two wonder goals in his side’s 3-0 win at the Weston Homes Stadium, are also in contention for his signature.
One thing that could work in Wrexham’s favour is that May’s former Cheltenham team-mate and close friend Ben Tozer, who captained The Robins to the League Two title in 2021, has already made the switch to Wrexham after dropping down two divisions.
May first made a name for himself in Non-League in Kent when he starred for Hythe Town before landing a professional contract with Doncaster Rovers.
He would later put his name up in lights when he netted for Cheltenham against Manchester City in the FA Cup before earning praise from Pep Guardiola.

And should Wrexham’s Hollywood owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney come calling this summer, it wouldn’t be the first time May has received American interest.
May’s red-hot goalscoring form in England previously caught the eye of former USA international Landon Donovan, who manages USL Championship side San Diego Loyal.
The US-based club tried to prise him away from English football with a lucrative proposal in January 2022, even offering to move May’s entire family to California.
“They were happy to pick up my kids and my wife to ship us over there to start a new life in July,” May told Sky Sports in 2022.
“When my agent called me, it was like ‘Wow!’ but my wife said no straight away! But she looked out of the window one day and it was raining hard – she rang my parents and told them we were going to San Diego as it’s warmer over there!
“I sat on it for a few days, but you have a time limit to get back to the club and I sat down with the gaffer and he was open and honest with me. He said that he doesn’t believe I’m finished.
“He said that my name is on the map at the minute in the UK and the minute I leave to go to America, my name will come off it. And then I might only have 18 months over there.
“He spoke as a professional footballer to me and I felt like that was important that I knew what he wanted from me and that he wanted me to stay and sign a new deal. I’ve had people say that they bet I wish I didn’t sign that contract, but I just try and ignore it all because I know that personally, for me and my family, it was the right thing to stay in Cheltenham.
“But if something like that comes up in three, four or however many years, it’s definitely something to look at.”
It’s understood there are also Championship clubs tracking May’s goalscoring exploits, meaning Wrexham could face fierce competition for his signature at the end of the season when he is expected to leave Cheltenham.
