Wrexham chiefs Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney stun fans with cash gesture

What can Wrexham expect in League Two?

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have already put their money where their mouth is when it came to turning Wrexham into a Football League club once more. But now the celebrity pair has shown just what the North Wales city means to them by showing their support for a local cause, twice.

Deadpool actor Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star McElhenney bought the North Wales outfit in 2021 and have since invested over £10 million into the club, turning them from non-league also-rans into National League Champions with a record 111 points last season.

The pair have been widely praised for integrating themselves seamlessly with the people of Wrexham despite their high-profile lives and now they have demonstrated their appetite to support local issues by making a substantial donation to a charity football match.

The soon-to-be-defunct FC United of Wrexham will play their last ever match against Wrexham Police FC in a game that has been arranged to help raise money for the Children’s Ward at Wrexham’s Maelor Hospital.

Organisers had originally planned to try and raise £5,000 off the back of the event but smashed through that checkpoint last month when they received a £5,000 online donation from a user called RR McReynolds with the comment: “Up The Town”. With the original target already met, delighted organisers doubled the total goal to £10,000.

And after writing another message on the match’s Justgiving page on Sunday, the Hollywood actors donated another £3,900 ($5,000) to the fundraiser, leaving it just short of the £10,000 mark.

Reynolds and McElhenney’s message read: “Great game for a great cause! Let’s see some goals!!!!”

Thrilled by the generous donation, FC United of Wrexham Tweeted: “@RMcElhenney & @VancityReynolds have only gone & done it again. These guys are super hero’s without the capes!!! As this will be our last football match as a men’s side we can’t thank them enough as we take on @wrexhampolicefc on July 1st at Bronwen Green 10.30am ko!”

A similar message of appreciation was shared by Wrexham Police FC. They Tweeted: “They’ve gone & done it again! Diolch & Thank you @RMcElhenney & @VancityReynolds for your generosity & continued support for our charity football match vs @FCUtdofWxm, the Maelor Children’s Ward, @awyrlascharity & the #Wrexham community, you’re both truly incredible @NWPolice.”

The Children’s Ward at the Maelor Hospital looks after children and young people from birth to 18 years from a variety of specialties including high dependency, oncology and chronic conditions such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis and asthma. Their service users come from all across Wrexham and Flintshire as well as parts of Shropshire, Powys and Gwynedd.
