Wrexham boss sends transfer message to Ryan Reynolds after Premier League links
What can Wrexham expect in League Two?
Wrexham’s title-winning squad doesn’t need overhauling to challenge for promotion again next season, despite the rejuvenated club being linked with several Premier League players on their return to the Football League. That’s the view of Red Dragons boss Phil Parkinson, who led his side to National League glory with a record-breaking 111 points.
After spending 15 years in the non-league wilderness, the North Wales outfit will compete in EFL League Two next season and thanks to the spending power of their Hollywood actor owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, a clutch of household names have already been linked with an eyebrow-raising move to the Racecourse Ground.
Gareth Bale, Morten Gamst Pedersen and Phil Jones have all been named as possible targets but that all seems at odds with boss Parkinson who insists that he won’t need to change much to be competitive once again next season.
Speaking to GOAL, he said: “There is always a lot of speculation every summer about players that we are looking at. We are just going about our business and looking at targets, but bearing in mind the fact that we have already got a strong squad to go into pre-season.
“We are not in a summer where we need seven or eight players because the squad is strong. Of course, ideally, we would like to improve in one or two areas and we are looking to do that but my feeling is it might take a bit of time.”
Wrexham’s celebrity owners have helped turn the club’s fortunes around by investing over £10 million since completing a takeover of the historic Welsh team in November 2020.
Their superior financial resources allowed the pair to convince established EFL players to drop down to English football’s fifth tier, including top strikers Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, captain Ben Tozer and midfielder James Jones.
They were even able to persuade former England international goalkeeper Ben Foster to come out of retirement during a goalkeeper crisis towards the end of the season, playing a crucial role in helping the Dragons to stay on course for the title with an injury-time penalty save against rivals Notts County.
Canadian-born actor Reynolds has already appealed to Welsh legend and ex-Real Madrid star Bale to come out of retirement and spend a season at the Racecourse, but that looks like an ambition that is unlikely to come to pass.
Wrexham’s significantly heightened profile sees them travel to the USA this summer, where they will face Chelsea in a pre-season fixture that has already sold out. But supporters in the States wishing to grab a glimpse of the rising stars can still do so by attending an open training session the day before.
