Wrexham announce friendly vs Todd Boehly's Chelsea in North Carolina
Wrexham announce friendly with Todd Boehly’s Chelsea in North Carolina in July, six days before Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhanney’s team play Manchester United in California
Wrexham have announced a second illustrious pre-season friendly in the United States – this time against Todd Boehly’s Chelsea in North Carolina on July 19.
The Welsh side, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, will meet the Premier League side in Chapel Hill at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium, which has a capacity of 50,000 stadium.
It will be the first time Wrexham has ever played against Chelsea. Wrexham is already scheduled to play Manchester United on July 25 in San Diego, California.
Wrexham added in a statement on Thursday that the team plans on announcing two other games in the United States, one more on each of the east and west coasts.
The Welsh team is currently fighting for promotion to the fourth tier of English soccer in what has been a gripping season so far.
But for Boehly and Chelsea, it can’t really have gone much worse in 2022-23.
After spending over $700m on new players, coach Graham Potter was sacked for a dreadful showing in the Premier League, with club legend Frank Lampard in as interim coach until the end of the season.
The London team is 11th in the Premier League standings.
American soccer fans will be hopeful United States star Christian Pulisic remains at Chelsea for the Wrexham game.
Pulisic has been strongly linked with a move away, with first-team chances limited in part due to the huge influx of players arriving since Boehly bought the team.
