Wout Weghorst bids farewell to Manchester United on Instagram

Wout Weghorst bids emotional farewell to Manchester United on Instagram saying ‘dreams came true’ despite scoring just twice in underwhelming Old Trafford loan spell

  • Wout Weghorst has posted a heartfelt goodbye message to Manchester United
  • Weghorst scored only twice in 31 appearances after signing on loan in January
  • The Dutch striker has since returned to Burnley but has been linked with Everton

Wout Weghorst has thanked fans of Manchester United for their support and says that his ‘dreams came true’ during his six-month loan spell at the club.

The towering Dutch striker scored only two goals in 31 appearances after joining on loan from Burnley in the January transfer window.

However, he still reflected on his time with Erik ten Hag’s side positively, posting a video on Instagram that showcased his favourite moments in a United shirt.

Weghorst cut short a loan spell in Turkey with Besiktas to join United for the second half of last season, but the Carabao Cup winners have decided not to sign him on a permanent deal.

Against the backing of the popular Old Trafford version of John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’, Weghorst expressed his pride at having represented the club.

Weghorst returned to Vincent Kompany’s side, who are preparing for a return to the top-flight

The Dutch striker begins the video by addressing the Old Trafford faithful directly: ‘Dear Man United fans, thanks for everything.

‘I really enjoyed every single second at this club. From winning silverware to scoring my first goal against [Real] Betis at Old Trafford.

‘Dreams came true. Unbelievably proud to wear the badge. Wish you all the best for the future. Manchester United fans – thank you for everything.’

Weghorst was criticised early in his United career for touching the iconic This Is Anfield sign ahead of an embarrassing 7-0 defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals.

But his determined hold-up play and impressive aerial ability made him something of a cult hero by the end of his spell in Manchester.

Fans reacted to the video on Twitter, expressing gratitude to Weghorst for his efforts.

One wrote: ‘The guy knew what it meant to play for Manchester United’.

Another added: ‘He was a good lad’.

Others were less complimentary, with one fan writing: ‘He was useless but he gave his all and you could see how much it meant to him every time he wore the shirt. I’ll miss Weggy’.

Others expressed a similar sentiment. One fan wrote: ‘He had all the passion in the world, just not the ability, will always appreciate Weghorst tho, once a red always a red’.

Another added: ‘We will miss your passion. You always gave us your 100% whenever you put on the shirt and for that we will always be proud of you’.

In an interview with United’s official website, he outlined how significant it was to win the Carabao Cup after Ten Hag’s men beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley.

He said: ‘The final was, of course, the first time for me at Wembley.

‘To win there, also my contribution in the game, it was just a beautiful memory and a beautiful day to win my first trophy.’

Weghorst went back to Burnley in the summer but has featured rarely for the Clarets in pre-season, although he was greeted with disdain from fans in a friendly against Genk.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a potential return to Besiktas and a switch to Everton yet a move has not materialised.
