Tottenham defender Emerson Royal has been described as the ‘worst player in the league’ after an abject performance in Spurs’ 3-2 comeback win over Bournemouth. The Brazilian’s game was summed up in a dire moment during the first half when he smashed a shot out of the stadium to stop a positive attack in its tracks.

Royal has been widely criticised by Tottenham supporters for offering very little to the team. He is something of a liability defensively while his attacking talents leave alot to be desired, as evidenced by his performance against the Cherries.

Spurs fans have been calling for the player to be dropped, particularly after he was sent off in the north London derby, but Antonio Conte has stuck by his right-back despite the pressure. With Djed Spence, Matt Doherty and Ivan Perisic all itching for game time, it is not like the Italian does not have other options that he can turn to.

The worst of the 23-year-old was on display once again at the Vitality as he ballooned a shot into the streets behind the stadium during the first half. The effort caused Twitter user @NathanW74941122 to exclaim that the Brazilian was the ‘worst player in the League’ – an abject analysis that may well be shared by many of the Tottenham faithful.

He was hooked in the 63rd minute and the side dramatically improved in his absence with replacement Perisic getting the assist for the second goal. For many, it will feel that it was no coincidence that the improvement came once Royal had been taken off the park.

It was the second time in the space of a week that the defender had an eye-catching moment on the park for all the wrong reasons after he placed a no-look pass directly out of play against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League in mid-week. Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas was particularly annoyed by the player’s actions.

“That’s ridiculous,” he said while on commentary for BT Sport. “He’s got acres of space to put this ball into the box, if you’re going to do it, at least have the quality to do it.

“It was a good bit of play, the pressure was building again and then you’re just letting a team off the hook. It’s not the time to be doing that.”

Tottenham’s next match comes against Marseille in mid-week, in what is a must-win match to ensure progression to the knockout stages in the Champions League. It is unlikely that Royal will be involved given his performance today, with the wing-back now surely set for a spell on the bench.
