World Cup final referee confesses to making mistake in Argentina win over France

World Cup final referee Szymon Marciniak had admitted to making a mistake in Argentina's historic victory over France.

There were a ton of contentious moments in the game, which Argentina won 4-2 on penalties. And the Polish ref in charge on the day has now conceded at least one decision he made was wrong.

Upon reflection, the 41-year-old thinks he should've allowed a French counter-attack to flow when Argentina ace Marcos Acuna fouled an opposition player. But Marciniak stopped play to Didier Deschamps' side a free-kick instead.

However, he now reckons giving Les Bleus the advantage and coming back to book Acuna would've been the best thing to do. But despite admitting his mistake, Marciniak is happy with his overall performance in the high stakes clash as he insists he got all of the big decisions correct.

He said to Sport.PL, via The Mirror: " Of course, there were mistakes in this final, I interrupted the French counter-attack after a bad tackle by (Argentina's) Marcos Acuna. I was afraid that the fouled player wanted to unwind, and I read it wrong because nothing happened, and you could give an advantage and then come back with a card.

"It’s hard. In a game like this, I take such a mistake in the dark. The important thing is that there were no big mistakes."

But the French media don't agree with Marciniak and blamed his decision-making for costing Les Bleus the World Cup. The French are adamant that Lionel Messi's extra-time goal should've been ruled out because two Argentina substitutes were on the pitch at the time.

However, Marciniak hit back at the French by producing fresh evidence that showed several French players on the pitch when Kylian Mbappe scored one of his three goals on the night. The row between Marciniak and the French resulted in over 200,000 fans signing a petition calling for the final to be replayed.
