World Cup viewers on BBC and ITV slammed Qatar’s opening ceremony and complained that the artists were lip syncing before Argentina and France took the field to contest the final on Sunday. Performer Davido was notably criticised, as he joined the other acts to sing the tournament’s theme song ‘Hayya Hayya (Better Together)’.

One fan even noticed that “the camera had to pan away from” Davido as the acts were criticised for hiding behind the track. Another fan took to social media to claim it was “the worst miming” they had ever seen, before international football’s biggest spectacle as several noted how “embarrasing” the event was for Qatar.

Davido joined Qatari songwriter Aisha to perform the track, who were then followed by Ozuna and Gims to perform ‘Arhbo’ before Nora Fatehi, Balqees, Rahma Riad and Manal concluded with ‘Light the Sky’.

Fans felt that the lip syncing was obvious, as another viewer wrote on Twitter: “They’re not even hiding the fact they’re miming,” though some fans did enjoy the show despite the clear miming. “This ceremony has pretty cool from a visual standpoint and the music has been pretty good,” another fan added on Twitter. “Even if the performers look like they are lip-syncing from my pov.”

While another fan claimed it reminded them of poorly-dubbed films from 40 years ago: “The lip syncing for these closing ceremonies is bad. Like really bad. Remember those overdubbed ninja movies back in the 80’s? That bad.”

Some said it reminded them of the Olympics, however: “This pregame show is much like an Olympics pregame show,” a fan wrote on Twitter. “Lots of bodies choreographed with rappers in the center. Music is 100% piped in (lip-syncing). That’s not a criticism. The show has a lot of cool special effects.”

Fans also complained that BBC One were not showing the ceremony in full, as host Gary Lineker alluded to the show going on behind him as he and fellow pundits Alan Shearer, Rio Ferdinand and Pablo Zabaleta previewed the game.

The ceremony was broadcasted on both the red button and iPlayer, though viewers insisted that the main channel should also have shown it, similarly to how BBC One did not broadcast the opening ceremony in Qatar.

Though ITV broadcasted the event, which prompted praise from viewers. “Well done to ITV for showing the closing ceremony,” one fan took to social media to write. “Shame on you BBC. I always watch the World Cup Final on BBC because of no adverts, not this year.”
