Women’s World Cup final – Date, kick-off time, TV channel
World Cup: Women’s football ‘no longer needs to prove itself’
The Women’s World Cup is reaching its climax, with Spain booking their place in the final after overcoming Sweden on Tuesday. England go head-to-head with co-hosts Australia in the second semi-final on Wednesday morning, with everything now on the line for the countries left in the tournament.
Spain were involved in a dramatic finish in their last four showdown after they were frustrated for much of the game. Spain’s Salma Paralluelo eventually opened the scoring in the 81st minute, before Rebecka Blomqvist equalised in the 88th minute. But Spain captain Olga Carmona sparked wild celebrations seconds later as she popped up with a winning strike.
England needed a penalty shootout to overcome Nigeria in the last 16 and then had to come from behind to get the better of Colombia in the quarter-finals as Sarina Wiegman’s team won the match 2-1. And all eyes will be on Stadium Australia in Sydney on Wednesday morning as the second finalists are confirmed.

Who has won the Women’s World Cup in the past?
There have been eight editions of the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991. The USA won the inaugural tournament and went on to lift the trophy once again in 1999, 2015 and 2019. But the four-time champions were knocked out of this year’s tournament by Sweden in the last 16 after losing a penalty shootout.
Germany won the Women’s World Cup in 2003 and 2007 but were dumped out this year at the group stages after winning just one of their three matches. Norway were crowned champions in 1995, with Japan winning the tournament in 2011. So that means there will be a new Women’s World Cup winner this time around, with a fifth country set to get their hands on the illustrious trophy.
