Your view: Who wins?

Fleming out for Canada

Canadian star midfielder Jessie Fleming will not start in her side’s opening match against Nigeria today.

Fleming has been dealing with injury leading into the game but there was indication she would play against the Super Falcons after Canada head coach Bev Priestman told reporters on Wednesday they “should have the full squad available for the game.”

The idea here is Priestman probably wants to avoid using Fleming, who was Canada’s Soccer Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022, at this early point in the tournament with a niggle in play.

Matildas score massive ratings win as World Cup gets underway

More than three times as many people tuned in to watch the Matildas’ opening match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday night as did the first session of the Ashes fourth test.

Australia’s love affair with the Australian women’s soccer team continued, as the match with Ireland, which Australia won 1-0, drew a five-city metro audience of 1.24 million viewers on Seven, according to overnight figures released by ratings agency OzTam.

That made it the most-watched program of the night by a considerable margin, watched by almost 50 per cent more viewers than the second-most-watched program of the night, Seven’s 6pm news bulletin, which drew 827,000 viewers.

Hello and welcome

G’day and welcome to today’s live Women’s World Cup blog.

After an exciting first day that saw both host nations, Australia and New Zealand, claim wins in their opening matches – against Ireland and Norway respectively – we’re back for another Group B clash (the Aussies’ group) between Nigeria and Canada at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

It’s the reigning Olympic champions in Canada up against the most successful side in African women’s football, the Super Falcons.

And the results could have big implications on the Matildas’ path through the group stage.

Kick off at 12:30pm.
