Wolves to swoop for Julen Lopetegui with him set to leave Sevilla
Julen Lopetegui’s three-year stint at Sevilla is set to end THIS WEEK… paving the way for the former Spain and Real Madrid boss to take over at Wolves, with Mainz manager Bo Svensson also a candidate to replace Bruno Lage
- Wolves target Julen Lopetegui set to leave Sevilla this week after three year spell
- The Spanish boss is high on Wolves’ list as replacement for sacked Bruno Lage
- Lopetegui has also managed Real Madrid and the Spanish national team
- Danish coach Bo Svensson is another name linked to the managers job at Wolves
Wolves target Julen Lopetegui is set to leave Sevilla in the coming days to pave the way for a possible move to Molineux.
Though not the sole candidate, Lopetegui is high on Wolves’ list to succeed Bruno Lage, who was sacked last Sunday following the 2-0 defeat at West Ham the previous day. For the trip to Chelsea on Saturday, Under-18 coach Steve Davis is expected to be in the technical area along with Under-21 boss James Collins.
Yet there is growing expectation in Spain that Lopetegui’s three-year tenure will come to an end, possibly after Wednesday’s Champions League meeting against Borussia Dortmund. Former Argentina and Marseille boss Jorge Sampaoli has been lined up for a second stint at Sevilla.
Julen Lopetegui is set to leave Sevilla and could walk straight into the Wolves managers job
Lopetegui won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 and has also managed Real Madrid
If Wolves did then opt to move for Lopetegui, who has also managed Spain and Real Madrid, they would be able to do so without having to negotiate his release with Sevilla, where he has a contract until the end of next season.
As well as Lopetegui, Wolves are looking closely at Danish coach Bo Svensson, who works at German club Mainz – where both Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel made their names.
Wolves owners Fosun have long admired Lopetegui, who has close links with Jorge Mendes’ powerful Gestifute agency, which represents a number of Wolves players. The former goalkeeper was close to taking the Wolves job in summer 2016, only to accept the Spanish national post instead.
Sevilla won the Europa League in 2020 in Lopetegui’s first season, beating Wolves in the quarter-finals, and are involved in this season’s Champions League. But they have had a poor start to the domestic campaign, winning only one of their opening seven league games to leave them above the relegation zone by a single point.
