Wolves are reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to sign a player who was handed a five-year suspended prison sentence and banned from entering Spain last July.
Defender Ruben Semedo was found guilty of a number of offences, including robbery, assault, kidnap and possession of a firearm, earning him an eight-year ban from entering Spain while he played for Villarreal.
Semedo was detained for five months by the Spanish authorities following his arrest in 2018 after he was accused of tying up and assaulting a man in his home before burgling the victim’s property alongside two others.
The 27-year-old, who now plays for Olympiacos, was also charged with attempted murder, which he has always denied, before paying his £25,000 bail.
However, The Sun reports that Wolves are still interested in signing Semedo on a one-year loan deal despite the player’s history.
Wolves boss Bruno Lage is also looking to add an option to buy in a deal for the central-defender, who has previously spoken on his time in prison.
He told Portuguese newspaper A Bola: “I cried a lot of nights, I never did it in front of anybody, but I couldn’t sleep many nights and I was thinking about my children and my family suffering.
“It makes you think if it is really worth not spending time with your family to spend time with people who don’t care about you and lead you down paths which won’t get you anywhere.
“I suffered a lot and yes, I cried a lot of nights.”
Semedo has three caps for Portugal and will be remembered by fans of both Premier League North London clubs.
He scored for Olympiacos against Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 Champions League before helping his side to a memorable win at the Emirates Stadium in the Europa League, knocking out Arsenal in extra-time.
Semedo even played against Wolves in the Europa League last year as the Premier League side progressed following a Raul Jimenez winner.
