Wolves in talks with Neil Cutler to become their goalkeeping coach

Wolves in talks with Neil Cutler to become their goalkeeping coach, after he left Aston Villa despite being highly rated by Emiliano Martinez

  • Neil Cutler was admired by Emiliano Martinez during his four years at Aston Villa
  • He left Villa Park last Autumn when Unai Emery took charge of the club
  • The 46-year-old is now in talks with Wolves over a golakeeping coach role

Emiliano Marintez’s former mentor Neil Cutler is in discussions with Wolves to become the club’s new goalkeeping coach.

With Tony Roberts’ departure to AC Milan set to be formalised imminently, Wolves are looking for a replacement and have identified Cutler, who left Aston Villa last October, as a strong candidate to succeed him.

Cutler’s four-year association with Villa ended last autumn when Unai Emery replaced Steven Gerrard and chose to bring in his own man, Javi Garcia, to take charge of the goalkeepers.

That was a blow not only to Cutler but also to Martinez, who described him as the ‘best English coach by miles’ and that football had been ‘unfair’ on his friend.

Martinez added: ‘I can’t thank you enough for the way you helped me since day one. Not just a goalkeeping coach to me, you became my friend.

Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez described Cutler as ‘the best English coach by miles’

‘Unfortunately football isn’t fair sometimes but I’m sure you will find the right club for you.’

When Martinez joined Villa in 2020, he said of Cutler: ‘I spoke to many goalkeepers that I know and they only told me good things about him.

‘When I spoke to him, he told me the way he works and how he wants me to improve my game. I truly believe his words, that’s why I’m here.’

Should Cutler join Wolves, they would become the fourth Midlands club he had worked with, after spells with Walsall and West Bromwich Albion.

Soon after leaving Villa, he said: ‘I’m devastated to leave the football club. What I built over four years was working, and with the young boys coming through, the way Emi (Martinez) was performing, everyone was developing really well.’
