Wojciech Szczesny leaves pitch in tears after suffering chest pains

Wojciech Szczesny was taken off in tears during Juventus’ Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon. The former Arsenal goalkeeper reportedly started to feel chest pains during the match and immediately called for his substitution.

The incident occurred shortly before half-time as he went down holding his chest and called for medical assistance. It did not appear that any other player was involved with team-mates and opponents concerned for his wellbeing.

He was immediately subbed by Juventus’ manager Massimiliano Allegri and appeared to be in tears as he walked down the tunnel to the applause of the entire stadium. He was replaced by Mattia Perin.

Juventus have since confirmed that Szczesny has been taken to hospital for tests and completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) which checks the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity.

Medics continue to try to get to the bottom of the problem but Sky Italy report that no irregularities have been found so far.

Juventus have given an initial update on his well-being tweeting: “After an initial check, Tek is doing well”. The club are expected to give more detailed information as and when they know more.

Sporting also showed their support by tweeting “Forca, Szczesny,” after the Pole was forced out of the game.

Szczesny first made his name at Arsenal after making the No 1 jersey his own but his performances eventually declined losing his place to David Ospina.

He left the club to join Roma on loan in 2015, spending two years in the Italian capital before moving on to Juventus for a fee of over £10million as the Serie A giants sought a long-term replacement for Gianluigi Buffon. He has spent most of his time in Turin as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
