Wimbledon’s new home kit proving extremely popular with fans of Boca Juniors

AFC Wimbledon’s new home kit has sent fans of Argentinian club Boca Juniors wild.

The Dons last week released their new home strip ahead of the 2023/24 season. Kicking off their new era was another sumptuous kit which we have come to expect from the League Two side, made with the help of sponsors Umbro.

But there was one major change as the deep ocean blue was married with a yellow horizontal stripe across the front, hugely reminiscent of the South American side’s famous jerseys donned by the likes of Juan Roman Riquelme, Carlos Tevez and Diego Maradona.

And it sent tongues wagging on social media following its release, with Boca fans catching wind of the jersey launch and flooding Wimbledon’s Twitter account with admiring messages.

“Wimbledon my good old friend, this campaign we will be with you again,” one fan tweeted.

Another Boca supporter replied: “It’s definitely Boca,” while a third added: “Let’s go Wimble, let’s go!”

A fourth shared a snap of the new kit with the caption: “A football team called Wimbledon with the colours of Boca,” and several lovestruck emojis.

And a fifth proudly tweeted: “Things you didn't know you needed until now: the AFC Wimbledon jersey.”

Despite the clear resemblance and unlikely new union between the two sides, however, lifelong Wimbledon fan and kit designer Marc Jones has played down Boca’s influence on his new gorgeous creation.

Jones, a founder of AFC Wimbledon, said: “Each kit cycle there is a pull to look back at previous seasons and eras. I wanted to deviate away from that path so instead of travelling through our history I looked to other clubs who share our colours.

“It would be a bit of a stretch to suggest there are no other famous shirts that share a comparable style, but for those thinking only a famous South American side have worn similar I’d suggest a deeper dive. Especially nearer to home in Europe!

“The aim was a new kit for a new chapter, and given our one-year cycle this shirt will come to define the season. The small but important touches, from cut to collar to cuffs, were translated straight off the page and into the shirt.”
