Ashley Williams was full of praise for Denmark after they thrashed Wales 4-0 at Euro 2020 and insisted that Kasper Hjulmand’s side are determined to make a major impact at the tournament for Christian Eriksen.

After losing their first two group games, against Finland and Belgium, Denmark responded with a 4-1 win against Russia and followed that up with an impressive display against Wales in the last-16.

Former Wales international Williams feels that Denmark have an extra source of motivation as they look to succeed for Eriksen, who suffered a heart attack while playing against Finland.

Williams praised Denmark for their performance as they thrashed Wales 4-0 on Saturday

Eriksen has since been discharged from hospital and his team-mates are determined to do their utmost for him.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Williams said: ‘I think it’s a little bit bigger than the eleven men on the pitch. They’ve got momentum, it’s obvious they want to do this for Christian Eriksen. Sometimes as a team everything comes together in a game.’

Kasper Dolberg scored twice for Denmark against Wales, with Joakim Maehle and Martin Braithwaite also getting on the scoresheet. Wales’ misery was compounded when substitute Harry Wilson was sent off late on.

Denmark were backed by a significant amount of supporters on Saturday and Robbie Savage echoed Williams’ statement by saying that Hjulmand’s team have done Eriksen proud.

Denmark produced a spirited performance as they secured an emphatic victory against Wales

Savage said: ‘Denmark will go to Baku next. The 20,000 Danish fans in the stadium were magnificent. The Wales fans tried their best but they were drowned out by the Danish fans. They’ve done Eriksen proud today, the team. It’s disappointing for Wales – the highs and lows of football, we’ve all been there.’

Former Wales boss Mark Hughes added: ‘Given what they’ve been through you sense Denmark have a glue that is going to take them far.’

Denmark are now through to the quarter-finals, where they will take on either the Netherlands or Czech Republic next Saturday.

If they continue to perform with such enthusiasm and determination then they have a chance of progressing even further.
