The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Gary Lineker and a handful of other high-profile names took to social media on Wednesday night to extol England’s dramatic 2-1 comeback against Spain in the Euro 2022 quarter-finals.
After falling 1-0 behind to Esther Gonzalez’s opener shortly after the break, substitute Ella Toone rescued England with an equaliser in the 84th minute, before Georgia Stanway netted a long-distance screamer six minutes into extra-time.
The Lionesses had yet to face a major challenge at Euro 2022, notching three wins in three and scoring 14 goals during the group stage, but looked destined for an exit until Toone changed the tide with her leveller.

Shortly after the final whistle blew and England booked their spot in the semi-finals, several celebrities took to Twitter to laud the Lionesses for their impressive comeback.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tweeted: ‘Great performances and comeback Lionesses, brilliant team effort!’
Meanwhile, former England legend Gary Lineker said: ‘Wonderful victory for the Lionesses. Well played.’

BBC News reporter Emily Anderson posted to say that she was thoroughly enjoying the crowd booming out Sweet Caroline and Freed from Desire at the end of the match.
Endorsing equality in football, former England international Trevor Sinclair insisted that the women’s game should be perceived as entertaining as the men’s following the Lionesses’ scintillating comeback.
And Ian Wright, who covering the match live alongside Alex Scott as a pundit for the BBC, posted a video of the two of them jubilantly celebrating.
