Wijnaldum and Liverpool hit contract stalemate as star’s latest stance emerges

Georginio Wijnaldum reportedly wants to stay at Liverpool, but will only do so if his wages are similar to other Reds stars.

Wijnaldum is out of contract at the Premier League champions in the summer and is able to speak to foreign clubs from this month.

Though reports suggest Liverpool’s Prem rivals Wolves are also interested in a move for Wijnaldum.

Contract talks remain ongoing with the Dutch star reportedly keen to stay at Anfield following his 2016 move from Newcastle.

Though Sky Sports say the midfielder believes his wages should compare more favourably with the club's top earners.

That could prove to be a stumbling block for any new deals with Wijnaldum currently believing to be earning £75,000 per week.

Meanwhile, the likes of Thiago, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all pocketing north of £150,000 every seven days.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made it clear he wishes to keep Wijnaldum, who has played in all 17 Premier League games this season.

Though European giants Barcelona and Inter Milan are also thought to be keen on the 30-year-old.

Speaking on Wijnaldum’s future, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said in November: "I would be happy if he would stay here.

"I am pretty happy with Gini as you can see when you look at most of the line-ups.

"He played always good, that's why he's played the amount of games he has. I cannot remember a lot of bad games to be honest."

Also speaking in November, Wijnaldum himself said: “I can’t say anything about that (my future). Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don’t they answer?

“I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.”
