Why Sergrio Ramos turned down astonishing £30m offer to join Arsenal

Sergio Ramos gave serious consideration to joining Arsenal after he was offered an astonishing £30million in wages which would have been paid over the course of a proposed two-year contract.

The Real Madrid legend left the Spanish giants in acrimonious circumstances as a free agent earlier this summer after he failed to agree terms on a new deal with Florentino Perez.

Several of Europe’s biggest clubs registered an interest in the 35-year-old defender and, according to Goal, Arsenal’s offer was said to have intrigued Ramos who only opted against joining the Gunners on account of their failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Manchester City also proposed a three-year contract and were prepared to offer Ramos the option of joining their MLS sister club, New York City, at the end of that period, but the former Spain international eventually settled on joining Paris Saint-Germain.

‘The best place to keep on dreaming, the best club to keep on winning,’ said Ramos upon confirmation of his move.

‘We’re going to fight with everything we have for everything. Allez. Paris Saint-Germain is a club that has already proven itself at the highest level.

‘I want to continue to grow and improve at Paris and help the team to win as many trophies as possible.’

Arsenal lost David Luiz, their most experienced centre-half, at the end of last season but are closing in on the signing of Ben White from Brighton.

The likes of City and Everton were said to have shown late interest in the England international, but a third offer from Arsenal in the region of £48m will, reportedly, finally tempt the Seagulls into selling the 23-year-old.
