Whitewash: Tottenham mocked by new sponsor Dulux after announcing paint partnership
Tottenham announced a new partnership with Dulux on Thursday and immediately received a coating from the paint brand on social media.
Spurs, who have been struggling on the pitch in recent weeks, unveiled their new “official paint supplier” in a tweet which pictured the Dulux dog, an Old English Sheepdog.
One Twitter user responded: “Can the dog play centre back?” Dulux replied from its main UK account: “He might do a better job Chris ?.” Another reply by Dulux pictured an empty trophy cabinet, referring to Tottenham’s lack of silverware. Both tweets were quickly deleted.
The attempt at levity comes at a sensitive time in north London, where Spurs are enduring a poor run of results and the pressure on manager Jose Mourinho is growing.
Their latest defeat, a 3-1 loss to Manchester United, revealed a downcast atmosphere in the dressing room, with the normally upbeat Son Heung-min among a number of players who appeared utterly despondent by their current run in post-match interviews.
Dulux is the latest brand to join the Premier League’s stream of unusual relationships. Manchester United have been particularly busy in acquiring new sponsors such as their “global mattress and pillow partner”.
Spurs announced they would “benefit from the unrivalled expertise in paint and colour that Dulux provides”, while Dulux vowed to “provide Tottenham Hotspur with high performance products that will tackle the most challenging of requirements”.
