Which Premier League team has the best attacking frontline?

Aston Villa are the surprise package, Liverpool have the most dangerous duo while Man United’s attackers have only mustered ONE goal… which Premier League team has the best frontline?

  • Haaland, Alvarez and Foden have a combined 30 goals and assists this season
  • Villa trio Watkins, Diaby and Bailey meanwhile have 12 goals and 11 assists
  • What’s the story with Raheem Sterling? Listen to the It’s All Kicking Off podcast

This season’s best Premier League attacking frontline belongs to the Man City trio of Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden.

With last year’s treble-winners sitting in first place in the league table above Liverpool and Arsenal, this may not come as a surprise to some.

But – looking at what attacking trios have played the most times together – Haaland, Alvarez and Foden have a combined 30 goals and assists this season, which is seven higher than their nearest competitor.

With Haaland’s 13 goals so far this season and Alvarez’s four alongside Foden’s three, the attackers have 20 goals between them on top of 10 assists.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s frontline of Ollie Watkins, Moussa Diaby and Leon Bailey have been the surprise package so far this season after recording a combined 23 goals and assists.

Unai Emery’s men have been a revelation so far and Watkins leads the way for Villa with six goals in 12 matches, while Diaby and Bailey have contributed three each.

The attackers have also recorded 11 assists, with Diaby and Watkins creating the second most amount of chances in the league.

In third, Liverpool’s frontline of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota have recorded 18 goals and four assists this season.

Tottenham are next with 20 combined goals and assists. Son Heung-min leads the way with eight goals, meanwhile Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison have three.

The trio have also recorded six combined assists, with Maddison contributing five of those.

Surprisingly, Chelsea’s trio of Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling are next in the rankings above Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, Bukayo Saka and Martinelli.

Jackson’s six goals combined with Palmer and Sterling’s four each contribute to their cumulative total of 17 goals and assists.

In comparison, Arsenal’s most-played front three of Nketiah, Saka and Martinelli only have 10 goals, but six assists.

Chelsea’s Jackson, Sterling and Palmer have surprisingly been more lethal than Arsenal

Befitting to their struggles so far this season, Man United’s attacking frontline of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Antony have only recorded one combined goal and assist so far this season.

Both the goal and assist have come from Rashford – who scored 30 goals across all competitions last season for United. The wait goes on for Antony and Hojlund to get off the mark this season.

Now looking at which teams have the best attacking duos, Nunez and Salah top the leaderboard for the most assists and chances created.

The Liverpool duo have assisted each other five times so far this season, with Nunez providing four of them.

They have also created 19 chances for each other, with Salah providing a Premier League high 13 of them, which is seven more than City’s Haaland and Alvarez.

Arsenal’s Saka and Trossard are tied with Maddison and Son and the Wolves duo Hwang Hee-chan and Pedro Neto for creating three assists for each other.

Nketiah, Saka and Martinelli only have a combined 10 goals, which is 10 less than City’s attack

Man United’s attacking trio of Antony, Hojlund and Rashford only have one goal and an assist

Interestingly, while Arsenal’s attacking line have struggled to score as many as City’s, five more Arsenal players have scored goals this season than the Manchester side which might suggest a different style of play.

Similarly, more Spurs players have contributed to goals this season than City.

When looking at the combined playing time out of these front threes, City’s Haaland, Alvarez and Foden have spent the most time on the pitch together at 2,941 minutes, playing in 33 games.

In comparison, United’s front three have only played 29 times together and for 2,080 minutes.

Tottenham’s attacking frontline of Son, Maddison and Richarlison have played together for the second most amount of time at 2,568 minutes while Arsenal’s attack is in third.

Despite combining to score 18 goals together, Nunez, Salah and Jota have only played 2,232 minutes together.
