Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Dean Henderson to be ready for a run of regular fixtures, according to reports. The shot-stopper filled in for David De Gea on Wednesday night against Crystal Palace. And he kept a clean sheet for the Red Devils as they slipped to a disappointing draw at Selhurst Park.

United were poor against Palace, with the Red Devils failing to return to winning ways.

But Henderson impressed between the sticks, with the goalkeeper producing a terrific late save to keep the Eagles at bay.

The United star was a surprise pick for the match at Selhurst Park. De Gea missed the game for personal reasons, with Solskjaer coy on the matter.

And the Manchester Evening News say the Norwegian has told Henderson to be ready, with De Gea potentially missing the club’s next six matches.

United are in action against Manchester City on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side have won their last 21 matches across all competitions and, certainly, won’t be easy.

The Red Devils then lock horns with AC Milan either side of a match against West Ham.

And United, after that, are scheduled to meet Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and Brighton in the league, too.

If Henderson starts at City it will be the first time he has started in successive league matches for United since breaking into Solskjaer’s side.

He’s played 13 times for the club across all competitions this term, keeping a respectable eight clean sheets along the way.

And with De Gea set to be missing for United for some time, Henderson is now set to be given the chance to show he can perform regularly at the highest level.

With the 23-year-old due for a promotion, Sergio Romero could be brought in from the cold to act as deputy.

If that doesn’t happen, then United could turn to Lee Grant – who amusingly acted as the fourth official in their recent goalless draw with Real Sociedad.

Solskjaer was coy on De Gea after the game against Palace, saying: “I can’t really say about David, it’s a private matter.

“Dean is ready if he’s called upon, you saw that. He kept his concentration.

“I think maybe it would have been called offside [against Van Aanholt] but at the moment I thought that Dean saved us a point because it looked like that was a deciding moment and that was probably the biggest chance of the game, apart from Marcus in the first-half.”

Former United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak recently claimed Henderson was the club’s future.

“He is a very young goalkeeper but it is no accident that he is there. He will get chances. Ole trusts him,” he said.

“He needs to find a way to the first team. He needs experience. He had a good time at Sheffield United and played very well, but Manchester United is a different team – you play internationally and have a lot of pressure.

“Being a goalkeeper is a difficult position. In the past you had very big names. Dean is the future of the football club. He will get chances. When the time is right, the manager will give him that chance.”

The Poland international then added: “I was 24 when I got there and had a fantastic goalkeeper in front of me in Edwin van der Sar.

“Edwin played the first season and I was pushing him. I was thinking it was my time but he performed for another six years at an unbelievable level and helped the team.

“I accepted my position, I hope Dean will get his chance. But at the moment David is number one.

“He has had a few dips but over the last few weeks he has been very good. Dean has to wait for his chance. A goalkeeper can play until 40 so he has time to play for United.”
